Case study: Fiberglass shower pan resurfacing
Problem: Customer wanted to keep existing pan
Solution: Apply a decorative vinyl flake coating to compliment tile colors
Preparation:
Remove drain cover and wipe surface with acetone to clean. Sand the surface with 80 grit sandpaper, vacuum up the dust and clean again with acetone. Apply tape to cover drain and apply tape to the sides where the tile meets the shower pan.
Coating application:
Apply the base coat material which is similar in color to the flakes being applied. While the base coat is still wet broadcast the flake into the coating to rejection, so you can not see any wet spots, let the base coat dry for several hours. Once base coat is dry, vacuum up the excess flake and sand with 80 grit sand paper, vacuum again. Apply clear top coat and wait to dry, if you want the surface smoother apply additional clear coats. Allow coating to cure for 24 hours before using the shower.
Summary:
This is a lot cheaper option to tearing out your perfectly good shower pan just to tile the floor to match the wall tile which can cost in excess of $1000. With unlimited color choices in the flake you can come up with a color combination that compliments your tile colors.
